By now, you may be familiar with the LAPBAND liquid diet post-surgery. You may also know what to eat, what not to eat, and have an idea of what the recommended portion sizes will be after surgery. But what about soda? Can you have it? And if not, what is the reasoning behind it?
After lap band surgery it is recommended that you avoid carbonation of all types which includes soda – regular and diet. Carbonation can lead to stomach discomfort, bloating, sharp pains or cramps, gas and hiccups. The carbonation can add pressure to your new pouch and stretch it, allowing more food to fit in the pouch and taking longer to feel full from eating. It can also increase the likelihood of ulcerations in the lining of the stomach, and the possibility of gastric erosion, esophageal dilatation and pouch dilatation.

A great majority of carbonated drinks contain a high level of sugar. In combination with the carbonation, high levels of sugar can affect the success of your weight loss. High level of sugar in sodas will sabotage your weight loss goals by leading to over-consuming calories. When you exceed your caloric intake, your weight loss progress will slow and may even stop all together. This could lead to you feeling frustrated, and sliding back into old habits. Our bodies also do not recognize “liquid calories” and there is generally no upper limit to the amount of soda, juice, or sweet tea we could drink. Avoiding carbonation altogether will help prevent you from over-consuming some of these problem foods.

There are many ways one can stay on track with their diet and still satisfy their sweet-drink cravings. Sugar free drinks such as diet Snapple or PowerAde Zero can help with the cravings. Crystal Light flavored packets are another great alternative! They are sugar free, come in a wide variety of flavors, and can be bought almost anywhere! Another option are Bai drinks which are sweetened with Stevia and come in a wide variety of flavors like peach, blueberry, and coconut. Another patient favorite is Diet Lipton Citrus Green tea – it is refreshing, light, and fruity!
