One of ours biggest rewards is witnessing the emotional changes our patients go through during their LAP-BAND journey. Meet Gwen. She came to us with a story many can relate to: low self-esteem and with no other desirable weight loss options. Since starting her journey in 2013, Gwen has lost a total of 82 pounds. She has blossom into the person she always knew she was and can happily share her a piece of her journey and some advice.
- What has been your biggest change since lap band surgery?
The biggest change in my life has been my self confidence. I used to be very self conscious about my weight, and hated buying new clothes. Especially when I had to go up a size. Starting at a size 26, before my lap band. I am now a size 10. Which is smaller then my senior year of high school! I can now hold my head up proudly any where I go, and I don’t have to find clothes to hide behind. I love the new me. And it shows in how I carry my self confidence. I knew this thin person existed on the inside. Now I can actually see it on the outside.
- What has been your biggest non-scale victory? (less medications, not needing a seat-belt extender on planes, more energy, etc.)
My biggest non-scale victory is I have more energy! I love to go shopping now. I feel so much more comfortable in my own skin. - What advice would you give someone thinking about lap band surgery
Contrary to popular belief, this is still hard work. It (the lap band) is not a magic pill. You need to embrace the changes and put in the time and effort to your diet and lifestyle changes for this to work.
