With that said, in our experience at the Community bariatric program, lap band surgery can improve the overall health of these women, lessening the rate of complications and improving the pre-term birth rate associated with obesity-related pregnancy.
CNN.com reported state-by-state pre-term birth rates in the U.S. with a grade from the March of Dimes. Indiana received a “C” grade, with a pre-term birth rate of 11.6%,that translates to an infant mortality rate of 7.44 (per 1,000 births) and an obesity rate of 29.6% among Indiana women of birthing age. Overall, Indiana’s obesity rate is ranked as 14th out of 50 states. (In comparison, Mississippi is ranked number 1 with the highest obesity rate of 34% and an “F” grade for a pre-term birth rate of 16.9% and 10 infant deaths per 1,000 births.)
