Surgery has a tendency to be scary, yes, nerves rattle thinking about it, planning for it, and living through the recovery time. We fear complications. Like other surgical procedure, invasive or not, the LAP-BAND surgery has minimal complications compared to other gastric surgery (bypass or sleeve). Currently, the ‘trendy’ weight loss surgery is the gastric sleeve (it removes 80% of stomach). The gastric sleeve is being marketed as minimally invasive. However it has complications comparable to all weight loss procedures.

Dr. McEwen and his weight loss team at Community Surgery Center Hamilton believe that the LAP-BAND surgery is a great option for patients that are not ready to permanently alter their internal organs or permanently remove their anatomy. Your future LAP-BAND® is completely reversible, removable and it can be adjusted for your individual weight loss in an office setting.
At Community Surgery Center Hamilton, Dr. McEwen’s LAP-BAND surgery is an outpatient procedure that provides effective and long-term results comparable to gastric sleeve (VSG) and Gastric Bypass (Roux EN Y) without invasive cutting, stapling and removing of your stomach or intestines. We firmly believe the LAP-BAND procedure has the least complications and is the safest option available for weight-loss surgery.
Post LAP-BAND surgery, if you are experiencing Digestive Issues such as, nausea, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, gastroesophageal reflux, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and regurgitation of food you should contact your surgeon or re-establish with another surgeon. These symptoms can happen with any weight loss procedure. It is importance to work on your weight loss surgery education, understanding the proper food to eat and behavior changes such as chewing (we recommend you chew for 15-25 times depending on consistency and texture). Your digestive issues can be prevented with pre-surgery education and post-surgery follow up care with our dietician, Lauren and our weight loss support team.

Our dietician, Lauren is committed to provide you with the proper tools and knowledge to make your LAP-BAND journey successful. Together, we strive to provide you, our patient, with a comfortable place of support, education, and medical care. Our goal is your success; your success is a healthy life. In addition to one-on-one with Lauren, our office offers monthly support groups where patients share their challenges, successes, knowledge and support. Our patients can connect with other LAP-BAND® System patients, participate in educational activities and listen to knowledgeable speakers such as mental health counselors, (psychologist, exercise physiologist, health and wellness coaches, weight loss doctors, and long-term successful patients).
