To Whom It May Concern:
Dr Keith McEwen does not prescribe diet pills or amphetemines to increase weight loss prior to Lap Band surgery or post operatively. He does refer patients to American Weight Loss for supervised weight loss but every attempt is made not to use amphetemines.
A patient who is 50 or more pounds overweight is at an increased risk for surgery. Amphetemines have effects ranging from heart problems, seizures, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, hair loss, nervousness, high blood pressure, and bleeding. These lead to increased surgical risk, post operative complications, and possible death. Therefore, any patient presenting for the lap band system is required to discontinue these pills for 60 days prior to and an EKG or cardiac clearance is usually required.
Our goal with the Lap Band System is not for cosmetic weight loss. It is to help patients achieve a “healthier lifestyle”, reduce co morbidities (health problems), and lose weight. Any person under our program who is using prescription diet pills is doing so without our knowledge or consent. www.lapbandindiana.com
